Join us Monday, October 19th, 2026, for the Cloyne and District Historical Society general meeting, where we’ll show a never-before-seen video. The video showcases the amazing history of one of our early engineering marvels spanning two townships – the Ore Chimey Mine in the Township of North Frontenac and the Slave Lake dams, which generated hydro power in the Township of Addington Highlands. The hydropower was essential for drilling ore and dewatering the gold mine. The video explains how Johnny Bey discovered almost pure gold on a rock outcropping near Harlowe and sold the mining rights for $50.00, starting a decades-long gold-drilling operation. Everyone is welcome to this event. How many millions of dollars of gold still exist in the mine? Will it ever start up again? A Q&A will follow.
