“While assisting Robert Wise of Cloyne in starting his truck, which was stalled on the Harlowe Road, five miles north of Northbrook, County Constable Mont Woods was struck by a car. Constable Wood died a short time after admittance to Belleville Hospital. Constable Wood, on seeing the lights of an approaching car in the dense fog, attempted to shut the truck door when he was hurled twenty feet by the oncoming vehicle. He was taken by Provincial Police Gordon Stout in his cruiser to Belleville, but his injuries proved fatal.

The late Mr. Wood had been County Constable in Northbrook for the past thirty years and was highly respected by everyone in the district.

The funeral took place in Northbrook on a Monday afternoon with the Northbrook Legion, the Ladies’ Auxiliary and Flinton L.O.L. taking part. The Legion memorial ritual was read by the Legion President, with J.J.Savigny sounding the Last Post and Reveille.

The late Mr. Wood was a charter member of the Northbrook Legion Branch.  Buriel service was conducted by the Orange Lodge. Rev. Borland was in charge of the funeral service. The bearers were members of the police force from the communities and the district.”
